Wasn't Tatum's book great? I am Black and Latina, and always attended (was bused) to predominantly White schools. I sat at "The Black Table" at lunch, not because I didn't have White friends, but because I just felt that after being held up to a White standard all day long (only one of us in the Honors/Gifted classes) I wanted to enjoy the company of my people, our common experiences, and our culture. Passive racism runs rampant, and while Whites do not often pick up on it, the objects of that racism do. I truly felt like an alien all day except for the 50 minutes I had at lunchtime. Especially when it was U.S. History time, and we were discussing slavery (and everyone looked to me for "The Black Opinion") or during American Literature, when I asked my teacher why we didn't study Harlem Rennaisance authors and was told that my people were just too "vulgar." Like "The Sun Also Rises" or "The Grapes of Wrath" didn't have their fair share of vulgarity ( ... )
