I sighed, staring out of the windows, bathed in sunlight.

Bathed in sunlight... Never thought that would happen. But then... taking over an evil law firm, they probably knew that they'd have to do something way out of their way to get my attention... and this was quite a way to do it ( Read more... )

Angel had been distant. No more than distant, for a moment I had wondered if working here had already gotten to him. I still wondered why we were in these jobs, doing this work. We have all the resources in the world at out fingertips and yet it doesn't feel like we're doing any good. Maybe it's too soon to tell.

Knocking gently at the door, I walked in.

"Well, this is a rather nice office, " I commented, looking around. Cheers for being CEO.

I turned around at the knock on the door, in time to see Wes come in.

"Yeah, I know... perk of being the boss," I replied, a hint of a smile crossing my face. "Your office any good?"

I moved away from the window, rounding the desk and nodding to him. "So, what brings you here, Wes? Anything important?" Not that I didnt have plenty of... 'important' paperwork to be doing, but... I hated doing the paper work.

"Not any official business." I tell Angel, returning the smile. "My office isn't quite a CEO office, but it is just as good," I replied before I catch sight of something in the corner of my eye, "You have a television?"

"Um, yeah..." I said, turning toward it. "You guys don't? Not that I even have time to watch it..." I muttered. Or that there was anything on it to interest me... I had never had that much of an interest in TV anyway, so why would they give me one?

"And good, no business... I have enough of that," I told Wes. I sat down in my chair, and offered, "Want something to drink?"

"Yeah... but do they feel this way, too?" I asked. The last I had seen of both Gunn and Fred, they had been pretty happy with their new lives, and Lorne... well, I barely saw him these days. He was just thrilled with his new job... schmoozing with all the stars.

Meanwhile, though, I couldn't tell if any of them really missed the life we used to lead. They were still into helping people, but... we had people we could tell to do that now. And somehow, it didn't feel right to me.

I was supposed to be helping people to start working toward redemption. But this? This was sending other people to do the job for me... which didn't sit right with me.

"And what are we going to do?" I asked Wes. "Somehow, I don't think they'll want to just drop their jobs." Wolfram and Hart had been nothing if not thorough when deciding what to bribe us with...

"I'm almost positive that Fred feels the same way that we do." I insisted to Angel, "Though I'm not so sure about the others, I doubt that any of us are fully happy here."

"I'm not suggesting dropping our jobs here..." I corrected, thinking for a moment. "Just making the most of what we have. And figuring out together how to do that. I think it'll be all the better if we're all on a similar plan."

"Yeah..." I said slowly. "If we could figure out a way to help people without employees of the firm following us, and forcing waivers on the people we save," I said, roling my eyes.

That hadn't gone over so well when I had tried it last time... the poor woman had thought I was in it for something else, other than... just wanting to help.

But then again, the paperwork pretty much kept me on Wolfram and Hart's leash.

"It'd work," I admitted. "And it'd be more like what we wanted to do when we originally signed on to do here."

I tap slightly at the top of the beer can with my finger. "Funny how they let us think that we're in control, when really they're the ones that still have it."

I stop tapping and look up to Angel, "So, how do you suppose we get out of Wolfram and Hart's eye?"
