yesterday i had a beer. but for the 7 days preceding that, i had none. after my post about alcoholism i back-burnered thoughts of illness and addiction because i'd kind of made my peace with the situation--i like drinking but don't believe i'm compelled to do it or anything. and suddenly i had a day where i explicitly didn't feel like drinking, ( Read more... )

Shawn and I end up spending way too much money on beer, because we like it but we don't like the cheapo stuff. Gah! Obviously we won't be able to keep this up on the trip.

We barely drank when we visited Heather A in Vancouver...the beer is so goddamn expensive in Canada!! Yikes!

I remember once being at Sauce's house (do you know him? bicycle mechanic who drives a school bus and collects pinball machines?) when some Vancouver people were visiting, and they went to Fred Meyer and came back with a case of New Belgium bottles, they could not get over how cheap beer is here.

On his blog, Shawn has all these suggestions for helping us out on The Big Trip, and I sometimes think we should put down "buy us a beer."

Oh, and: WTF is up with me and hangovers lately? I can bike home and feel hardly tipsy, and then lie down and get a case of the spins and be incapacitated the next day. Shawn seems to think it only happens when I drink liquor and that I should therefore stick to beer, but I'm not sure that's the case.

Meh. I should just always drink water when I'm drinking booze, and always always remember to eat something! When I'm excited about something (and if I'm going to a party, I get pretty excited) I completely lose my appetite, and it bites me in the ass later.

I swear to god, I get hungover so much more easily now than I did when I was in my 20's. I remember nights I got the spins where I felt just fine the next day, if maybe a little tired and thirsty. Now I feel like shit for a day and change if I get that drunk.

I think sticking to drinking at social occasions is a good policy in general.

When I did my big clean up/dry out years ago, there were a lot of clarity of mind benefits and other sorts of subtle improvements that didn't start appearing until I'd been clean for a few months. I applaud you on your week, but a week's a lot different than a month's a lot different than etc.
