Too bad you didn't take my advice and read Guns, Germs, and Steel right after Pastwatch. In terms of themes, they have some fascinating connections, especially as one is fictional sci-fi and the other is academic anthropology. But Handmaid's Tale is totally worth the break in topics. I read another dystopia right before or after that, but now I can't remember which one.
I loved Handmaid's Tale. And I LOVED Barbara Kingsolver's work. I read all of them one summer.... that was a good summer of reading (the 5th Harry Potter came out at the same time....).
Good luck with the girl. Hopefully it goes well and gives me some confidence!!
