Conservation Canine Handler

So my job title has changed, once again. I am now a Conservation Canine Handler for the Center for Conservation Biology, a non-profit org based out of UW. The good news is that I love my work, as it combines my two favorite ways to spend time, working with dogs, and doing field conservation biology work. That's pretty cool! I'm happy you've found something to enjoy. Let me know if you're ever around Seattle as centauri and I would love to hang out or if you just need a place to stay (we have lots of room, and a yard :)

I'm really happy to hear that. It's very good to know you've found something that's fulfilling and suited to all of the many talents you have to offer the world.

Granted, I'm desperately curious how dogs detect whale poo.

Are you kidding? You hardly need the dogs, except to decide on the correct county.

There's a technical psychological term in marriage counseling called the "poop detector". I always imagined a small battery powered device attached to a wife, but now I understand that its the purpose behind purse puppies.

Brings a whole new meaning to the term "out walking the dog." As for the whale poo, I'm not exactly certain how they detect it, except that the dog we use is terrified of the water (the only dog we have who doesn't like the water), so they must detect the odor from the bow of the ship. Its pretty amazing how good these dogs' noses are.

The look on that little Bichon's face just screams "WTF?!?"
