Current Music: Tiddas on Radio National

Since neither cupidsbow nor chaosmanor seem to have noticed (despite the fact that not only has it been BoingBoinged, it's been on c|net!), I thought I'd mention that, apparently as a result of complaints from a bunch of wowsers Six Apart (ie. LJ) has deleted a swathe of content including a number of fanfic communities and ( Read more... )

It's not that I hadn't noticed, but that the reaction was already so pervasive there was little left for me to say. My flist has been talking of nothing else. As I had no good suggestions to offer for positive action, no new or helpful insights, all I could have done was raise my voice in what was already a cacophany of protest. I certainly would have added my voice anyway if I had seen a need, and still may if a need becomes clear. But undirected anger does not seem a useful response to me; it will not be heard by LJ, who are already overwhelmed, and it will not help to stop the conservative censorship-mongers from continuing to wreak havoc either here on LJ or in other online fora.

Indeed; this seems to have resparked discussions ( eg.) from the last Six Apart debacle (breastfeeding) about dumping LJ en masse and starting another network.

Disbursing the target will. As the P2P nets and indeed the internet itself demonstrate, distributed networks are the answer.

I have such mixed feelings about the disbursement idea. If it can be made to work easily, then I have no pratical objection, but I'm annoyed that it is something we even need to consider. I mean, if it comes to a choice, I'd rather keep speaking the counter-discourse to radical right-wing conservatism in a public space, but I really dislike that it may be necessary. :(

Also, many reports say there is spyware on the Warriors' site, so perhaps warn people before they click your link.

most of the fandom communities seem to have been reinstated now, including the naughty pixies. And Six Apart are hanging their heads in penitence.

Yep; it's good to see those strikethroughs go.
