Short Stories

Sep 04, 2004 23:11

Ok here are four of the short stories that i wrote for my English class...it could be whatever we wanted.....my teacher told me that i couldnt do all scary/fantasy ones so i had to write a real life one kinda.... yeah so here they are!

The computer screen glowed, throwing shadows about the darkened room. The curtains were drawn, the only other illumination coming from an alarm clock on the desk. Tai blinked a couple of times and glanced at the clock. 2:30am. He sighed and looked back at the computer screen. In front of him were lines and lines of code. He had been working on this virus for months. It was his first serious virus that he had ever written.
Tai had spent months looking for the right version of Visual Basic, a program that let you write programs for whatever you wanted. Tai had written a virus.
It had all started with his English teacher, Mrs.Brown. They are very computer orientated at Hailebury, and the teacher expected all computer work to be sent by email to them. Tai had finished his five-page essay on the relationship between humans and animals. He had sent it to Mrs.Brown’s email address and thought nothing more about it. The next day he received an email back from his teacher. It was his file, with corrections and comments all over it, in red text.
Tai was a bit dis-heartened, being quite proud of his essay, but he re-wrote it all the same and sent it back.
Again the file was sent back, Mrs.Browns red text glowing like blood on the screen. Tai had read through her corrections in disbelief. She was correcting her own corrections, crossing out her suggested paragraphs, putting in snide comments on how poorly written his piece was.
Tai swallowed his anger, and again re-wrote the essay and sent it off.
Two days later Tai checked his email, anticipating what would be in there. Sure enough, there was his file, with even more corrections and crosses than ever.
Tai nearly screamed in frustration. It appeared Mrs.Brown had it in for him. Again he wrote the essay, vowing, that if she sent it back he would do something drastic to the schools computer system.
Tai had always been a computer genius, and had only one friend because of it. Thinking about it, Tai wouldn’t even call Sam a friend. They just sat together so they wouldn’t look like loners. The two sixteen year olds had hardly anything in common. For one thing, Sam was obsessed with WarHammer, and role-playing games. Tai thought they were a waste of time. Tai shut his eyes and pleaded to the Gods that Mrs.Brown hadn’t sent the essay back. Cautiously he opened one eye. There it was, the red blood text staring him in the face.
Tai nearly burst into tears. That was it. He’d had enough. He had downloaded Visual Basic and started writing the code for a virus that would wipe the hard drive and reformat a whole computer. When they would turn the main computer on, it would send to all the computers on the school server, causing a school wide crash. Tai grinned to himself and switched the computer off. Tomorrow was Sunday, and it would be the day he finished the virus.
Tai crawled into bed with a sigh. Just wait…He thought to himself. Just wait.

“Tai? Tai! Come on sleepy head! It’s eleven o’clock,” Tai’s mother called.
“Do you want some breakfast?”
Tai stumbled sleepily down the stairs, his raven black hair sticking up on one side of his head.
“Yes please,” he said groggily.
He felt more awake after a cup of coffee, and sat with his mother to eat breakfast.
“Got any homework tody Tai?” His mother asked.
“Umm, yeah,” Tai lied.
“What is it?”
“Just computer stuff.”
“Oh, ok,” she replied. Michelle had never been good with computers, so she didn’t ask any more questions.

After breakfast, Tai ran upstairs to finish his virus. He opened the file title ‘Triton’. Tai worked non-stop for close on six hours, his mum brining him sandwiches and coke.
Finally it was ready.
Tai rubbed his cramped hands and clicked on the preview he had made. The screen went black. Great big blue flaming letters appeared on the screen:

Tai’s heart was pumping with adrenalin. He’d done it!
Now to send it to the lovely Mrs.Brown. Tai grinned evilly. He had Mrs.Brown for period one on Monday, and she always hooked up her laptop to the projector on the roof. The whole class would see the virus in action!
The rest of the day passed surprisingly quickly. Tai went to bed early, for the first time in months. He fell asleep with a huge grin on his face.

Monday morning came with clear blue skies. Tai had to stop himself running to English when he heard the bell ring. He kept grinning all through the roll, when it was called.
“Right kids, laptops open, I will show some literature I downloaded last night.”
The classed groaned as Mrs.Brown turned on her laptop.
The projector magnified her screen just as it went black. Tai’s smile widened.
“What? What is this?!” Mrs.Brown shrieked. The whole class was laughing as the flaming words appeared on the screen.
Mrs.Brown was pressing all the buttons on her keyboard, but nothing worked. At that moment the principle came running into the classroom.
“Mrs.Brown!” He panted.
“We’ve been hit with a virus, the whole server is down!”
They were all let out for an extended recess, while the teachers were trying to fix their computers.
It turned out that not one of the teachers had any work on hard copy so everyone got sent home!
Tai explained why he was back early to his mum.
“Well! That’s awful!” She exclaimed.
Tai said nothing and sat on the couch and turned on the T.V. The news was on. He was about to change the channel when an emergency report came on.
“This just in, a virus has hit computers worldwide, via email. Companies have been closed with computers crashing everywhere. The source of the virus is being traced as I speak.”
Tai was stunned. His virus showed on the T.V screen, the flaming letters burning in his mind.
What happened? The virus was meant to stay in school. He jumped up and paced the room. This was bad. He could get arrested.
Tai glanced back to the T.V.
“The FBI are currently working on cracking the I.D code to track down who wrote this virus.”
Tai’s blood ran cold. He had to do something, and quickly.
He bolted up the stairs and turned his computer back on and opened up a blank file in Visual Basic. Just to be safe he opened C++, a program where he could double-check his code. He started writing an anti-virus frantically. Tai’s fingers flew over the keyboard faster that ever before.
After two hours of straight typing Tai was ready to test the cure. He clicked the program and waited. An error bow popped up.
“Damn!”
Tai went back to the code and re-wrote sections of it. He tried again. Again the error box popped up. By this time his palms were sweaty and he was finding it hard to type.
“Third time lucky” Tai wished to himself. He held his breath as his program disengaged the virus and restored all files.
Tai cried out in relief and sent it to everyone he knew, adding one more line of code to make the anti-virus open as soon as it came into contact with another computer.
Tai sighed in relief. It was going to be ok.
He jumped in shock as he heard a knock on the door.
“Open up! FBI!”

ok i hope these cuts are working. Ok the story above....inspiration for the main character came from Nerwen and Valandiel with thier friend Tai...for some reason i couldnt get his name out of my head, so i used it :) i was thinking that the story is a little childish for what i wanted to do...but it ended up ok i think....tell me what you think!

Right next story... we had to write something that started with the line "As though he didnt belong to anyone, or anywhere" it was a bit of a challenge...i wasnt that happy with this one, but here you go

As though he didn’t belong to anyone or anywhere, James young life had been an endless succession of foster homes and cold uncaring institutions. There was something different about him. Nothing obvious, but he never seemed to fit in with the many families that attempted to take him in. Perhaps it had something to do with the haunted look that occasionally cast a shadow across his attractive, rugged face, or his strikingly unusual eyes: deep hazel orbs that subtly shifted shades as he moved. There was knowledge beyond his years in those eyes.

James straightened up from the tangle of weeds that was his backyard. He glanced over at Paul. His foster father was attempting to mow their lawn. Paul wasn’t having much success, the weeds choking up the mower blade time and time again. James listened to the crunch of Paul trying to work the blades through the green mess. The mower died in a fit of roaring and grumbling. Paul sighed. “Well son, that’s it then, the mowers had it, looks like we are doing the rest by hand.” James narrowed his eyes. He had been living with Paul and Marie for over a year and he still couldn’t think of them as “mum”or “dad”, or even as family. He knew they meant well, and maybe even loved him a little, but somehow James knew that he didn’t belong.
“Lets say we go in for a drink eh?”
James nodded. It was hard work out in the garden, even though he wasn’t straining very hard to pull the tenacious weeds out of the garden. He had just had his sixteenth birthday a week ago, and Paul and Marie had taken him to the zoo for the day. Paul and Marie were worried about James. He was always either buried in a book, in his room or sitting out in the garden. He hardly spoke at all, and showed little interest in his surroundings at the zoo until they came to the came to the tigers.
James felt an instant affinity with the magnificent white Siberian tiger that was kept in its jungle enclosure. He walked calmly up to the fence separating the tigers from the people. As one, the tigers turned and looked up at him. It was obvious to everyone there that it was James the tigers were staring at. Paul and Marie where shocked and frightened. What was going on here?
James looked directly into the eyes of the largest white tiger as it padded right up to the edge of the enclosure. It regarded him with eyes that were in someway a reflection of his own. People were starting to gather around, amazed by the teenager who almost seemed to be communicating with this tiger. He knew without knowing how, that the tiger could answer the question he burned to ask, in the most logical way he could think of: With his eyes. I mean tigers don’t speak English!

He stared deep into the tiger’s eyes. Will I ever find my real family?
The tiger blinked and yawned before glancing at him again. Yes. You will find them soon.
James had smiled once at the tiger before being pulled away by his worried foster parents.

Marie poured out two big glasses of orange juice for Gary and James.
“Thanks love” Gary sighed.
“It wasn’t to hard for you, pulling out all those weeds?” She asked James.
James shook his head.
“Do you have any home work?” Again James shook his head. He finished his orange juice and ran upstairs to him room.
James threw himself onto the bed with a sigh. The tiger had said that he would find his real family soon. He knew that he wouldn’t find his real parents; they had died in a car crash a few years ago. The foster home service people had come round asking for him. They told him the bad news. James hadn’t even blinked. He never knew them. He was looking for his family, a family where he fitted in perfectly. He didn’t want to feel like a stranger anymore.
Later that night, after dinner James had a weird feeling in his stomach. Before he fell asleep a brief thought crossed his mind. Someday I will find my real family.

James slowly walked down the stairs to go and have breakfast. His ‘parents’ greeted him with a smile and a pile of waffles.
“After this, I’m going to go for a walk down to the park, ok?” James asked.
Greg nodded, “Sure son, just be sure to be before dark.”
James shuddered, but his parents didn’t see it.
“Be back later.” James said as he walked out the door.
Outside at last, James took a deep breath of the sweet spring air. He headed towards the local park, where he had found a small path that led to a glade, deep in the woods, which had a beautiful stream running through it. James flopped down onto the grass and put his arms behind his head.
His real family was out there…somewhere. He must have fallen asleep, because he found himself walking through the streets around his house. People were passing by him, not paying any attention to the boy standing in the middle of the street. James started moving along the street, wandering, searching. He looked up from his feet to see three people in front of him. They were all smiling. An older man and woman, and a girl about his age. Their eyes were glowing with love and acceptance. He heard their voices in his head.
“Hello James. It has been a long wait until this day. We have been looking for you for years. We are your real family. We can’t wait to meet you in real life, James. We will see you soon.”

James woke with a start. The sun was just setting. He must have slept in the glade for hours. He sat up and shook his head. Was his dream going to come true? Or was it just his sub-conscious showing him what he wanted to see?
James pulled himself up off the springy grass and headed home.
“I’m back!” He called.
“Ok honey! I’m just making dinner, we’re having steak.” Marie called back.
James walked into the kitchen where she was making a salad.
“Uh, actually…I’m not hungry. Is it ok if I just have an apple or something?” James asked her. Marie frowned. “Are you sure you’re not hungry dear?”
James shook his head and grabbed an apple and an orange as he passed through to his bedroom. He put some music on and collapsed on his bed and was asleep in minutes.

The next day they all went shopping. James needed new jeans and Marie had to get her watch fixed. Paul gave James some money and told him to meet them at the coffee shop when he had found the jeans.
James wandered around the streets, searching. James almost laughed out loud. This was his dream! A huge sense of de ja vu washed over him.
He held his breath, hardly able to get the nerve to look up from his shoes. Just like his dream, there were three people standing in front of him. “Welcome home James. We are all glad that we could finally meet up with you.” The woman bowed her head.
“Let’s introduce ourselves. I am Robyn.”
She pointed to the man and the girl next to her. “This is my husband, Will, and our daughter, Azhure.”
“I’m James.” He shuffled his feet. “Uh…this might seem…straightforward…but I have never fit in anywhere, I’ve never felt like I was anyone. I know I’ve just met you, but when I look at you, I feel a great sense of belonging. Can I come and stay with you?”
All three of them smiled. “That’s what we came here for. Don’t worry about your foster parents, all they will remember was that you went back to the foster centre to wait for your uncle who had tracked you down and wanted you to live with him.” Will said.
James laughed. “Thank you.” He said.
Together they walked towards a silver car, climbed in and drove away.
Incredible as it seemed, James truly felt that he belonged with these people that had just come into his life. He knew his loneliness was now a thing of the past, knew it as surely as he could see the love shining from three pairs of deep hazel eyes. Finally he was someone, and he belonged somewhere.

Right :D well inspirations for that one.....lets see...Laneth for the themes...i didnt actually talk to him when i was writing this..but you know how you think of people and kind of base some characters on close friends. Umm the tiger thing was a section from my life...(not real but close!) the woodland bit is actually right near my house...its beautiful down there

So this last one is called Darkness....the first one i wrote. Now remember people...this is for school, so my normal writing is alot better ;) lol just jokin but i do prefer pieces that i have written of my own accord (those wil lbe coming soon :D )

Darkness
It was two O’ clock Monday morning, and Sarah Miller was tossing restlessly in her sleep. She was running through the Melbourne streets, her breath coming in short puffs of fog in front of her face. Sarah could feel her pursuer gaining on her. She ran through countless streets, past buildings, her fear rising in her chest, threatening to overpower her. Sarah stumbled to a halt in front of a solid brick wall. She was trapped. Sarah spun around to face her fear. A man, clad in darkness, reached out a hand to grab her…
Sarah say bolt upright in her bed. Sweat mingled with tears of fear gave her face a silvery sheen in the moonlight pouring through her window. She looked around in fear at her room. Suddenly, the phone next to her bed rang, making her jump.
Who could be ringing at this hour?
Sarah sighed and reached for the phone.
“Hello?”
It sounded like the line was dead, but when she was about to put the phone back, she heard a rasping, wheezing sound.
“Hello?” Sarah said again. The breathing became louder. She dropped the receiver back on the cradle. A shiver ran down her spine. Settling back in her bed, Sarah thought of the school day ahead of her. David, her best friend would be there. They were both doing year 10 at Melbourne High School. Putting the phone call behind her Sarah slowly drifted back to sleep.

“Sarah? Sarah!?…Miss Miller!”
Sarah jumped and looked around.
“Up here Miss Miller. I would appreciate it of you spent more time listening in my class, rather than dreaming.” The teacher was frowning at her.
“Yes, Mrs.Taylor, sorry.”
“Not as sorry as me Sarah” She grimaced. After the maths class, David walked up to Sarah and gave her a hug.
“Are you ok? You were acting really strange in maths.”
“Yeah,” Sarah sighed, “ I had a really bad dream last night, then someone rang our house at two in the morning and was breathing down the receiver.”
David looked away, “Man that’s weird.” He glanced at her quickly. Sarah’s chestnut brown hair blew back from her face, showing her delicate features. David’s breath caught in his throat. If only she knew how deeply I feel for her.
If only…

The rest of the day went past in a blur. At last the home bell rang. Sarah and David got swept out the front doors in the crowd of kids. They walked together until they came to David’s house. Sarah continued down the deserted suburban street. A cloud passed over the sun, throwing everything into momentary darkness. Sarah shivered and sped up, eager to get home. She started to hear footsteps behind her, matching her pace. She tried to ignore them, speeding up herself.
The footsteps quickened with hers. By this point Sarah’s heart was in her mouth and her breath was coming in short gasps. Her nightmare was coming true. Behind her the footsteps started running, trying to catch her.
Sarah glanced behind her and what she saw turned her blood to ice. A dark clad man was chasing her. Sarah screamed and dropped her bag, and ran like a bat out of hell. Sarah wasn’t even paying attention to where she was going. Tears were running down her face, again mixing with her sweat. Sarah had never been so scared. She heard the deep rasp of the man behind her. Terror and fear struck her heart. This person had my phone number. It was him who rang that night…
Sarah stumbled round a corner and came face to face with a wall. A strangled cry escaped her throat. She spun around to face her fear once again. The dark man walked slowly towards her, breath heavily.
“What do you want?” She cried hoarsely.
He didn’t say anything. He reached up to his black mask and removed it. Sarah gazed upon David’s red and sweaty face.
“David?!” She cried in surprise.
A cold smile lit his face.
“ You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this.”
His gloved hand reached down for her. A scream burst from Sarah’s mouth, then all she knew was Darkness.
