I remember after the Republican covention at Kerry's stupid little rally thing he said "Now I have five words for you America... this is your wake up call" lol it's funny because wake up is two words not one.. so he really said 6 words.
A Grammar Note: In the context of the quotation that you cited above, the phrase "wake up call" [sic] should be transcribed "wake-up call" because the word 'wake-up' in is an adjectival modifier to the noun 'call'. As a result, the quotation should read: "I have five words for Americans: This is your wake-up call."
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary both treat the hyphenated word as a singular entity. While I can see where one might consider the phrase "wake-up call" a three-word phrase, it is equally valid to regard it as a two-word phrase due to the hyphenation.
Moreover, dismissing a presidential candidate's ability to serve our nation as the result of a single verbal slip-up is incredibly short-sighted and reductionistic. By this logic, one would have no choice but to be a staunch opponent of President Bush as well.
When taking and justifying a political position, you would be better off to consider a candidate's record and plans for America's federal policy, international policy, healthcare policy, educational policy, social policy, etc.
