you can open bank account in finland if you want to get some student financial aid , more info at :http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/english.nsf but i dont know is it so necessary to open bank account in here, its up to you.
My husband is from states, been here 1 year. and he hasnt transfer his moneys in here, because if im correct you have to pay quite lot of the transfer and it might take a long time until the moneys gets in here. So you can keep your american bank open, and pay here with credit card or bank card of yours.
thanks for the information! i'm not sure if i should open an account in finland or not...my programme seemed to think it was a good idea, but i don't know if there are a lot of fees involved or anything. do you know if it costs extra to use an american credit card in finland?
well i asked from my husband and he said that if you decide to transfer your moneys in finnish account, it cost like about 117 usd (8o euros) for every thousand dollars, quite expensive i would say. at least something like that they told us at bank.
And he also says that credit card should have the normal fee's in here ( he uses wachovia as bank). But you should ask from your bank, since they might know better about the credit card issue and the fees.
that was very nice of you to ask! thank you. i think i'm going to stick with my american bank card (it is a visa) and see how that goes. it sounds like transferring money into another account might be difficult and expensive, so i will gladly take the small fees associated with the credit card. i really appreciate you taking the time to get that information for me!
