August & September 2013: the it's-a-snow-day mix

IT'S A SNOW DAY! I can't believe it. The University of Minnesota canceled classes due to extreme cold. I don't think I've had an unexpected day off school since I was 10 or 11. It's the best.

I thought you weren't working for the U any longer. Did they hire you back?

I've never been hired there on any terms other than adjunct-like terms. (I'm actually a lecturer. I don't know how that rank differs from adjunct, but I think it is-- believe it or not-- even lower in the institutional hierarchy!) Anyway, like all contingent faculty positions, it's super unstable. When there aren't surplus classes, there's no work for me, and it's hard to predict, semester to semester, whether there will be surplus classes.
