What a week. First the fight with Taffy about how I was to blame for what happened to the play cast. Then an inquisition by the school board regarding the "tragic student fight". I'm not sure whether Taffy said something to them, or they just noticed that all the students involved were in the play. Not a word was suggested about magic, however, so ( Read more... )

Jordan's finishing up in his classroom and the bells already rung, seems like a perfect time to go out back for a smoke. Making my way behind the school to the staff parking lot and seeing no one there, I take out a cig and light it up, leaning against the wall.

I exit the building and head toward my car, a little preoccupied by the latest magic texts I have waiting for me at home. But it doesn't keep from noticing the juvenile delinquent smoking in the parking lot. Sheesh, it's like she wants to get caught or something! I veer from my course and go over to her.

"You're asking for detention at least--it's not the brightest place to light up," I say to her. I don't recognize her, she's not one of the play students. "What's your name?" I've got to remember I still have my responsibilities as a teacher, even if the year has gone down the drain.

I sigh and give her one of those 'are you kidding me?' looks before throwing the cigarette to the ground and smashing it with my shoe. I don't move from my leaning position against the wall. "Jenny McEvans," I say plainly, already bored here. "Is that all you need, can I go?" I ask the teacher. I've never seen her before, but she looks around Jordan's age. Maybe they known each other. Great.

"Jenny...McEvans?" I say, in surprise. Wait, I'd heard Jordan had a sister who got in some sort of trouble in Taffy's class. My whole expression changes, and I smile at her. "You're Jordan's sister? Well, maybe we can forget about this incident, as long as you promise to keep the smoking off school grounds from now on." No point in drawing his attention by getting his sister in trouble, and maybe...maybe I can put this to good use.

I see her look of doubt, and decide to go for it. "Maybe I shouldn't have said anything," I murmur. "I just hate to see someone doing something like that to your brother, he's such a great guy." So, maybe I'm making it sound like our friendship is a little more than a few conversations.

"But yes, there is real magic. I can do a little myself. Maybe..." I hesitate. I know damn well I can't break whatever it was Taffy did to those charms, but Jenny doesn't know that. "If you got it for me, I might be able to break it. But just getting the thing away from him should help."

Are you serious? She wants to help that badly? And all I have to do is grab the stupid thing? Heck, and I don't even get a detention. "You've got yourself a deal, Miss Vargas. I'll get you the talisman. It'll be easy."

I smile. "I'm sure it'll be the best thing you could do for your brother," I say. "You get it to me, and I'll see what I can do to reverse whatever it is she's done." I turn to head over toward my car, trying not to look too cheerful.
