For what it's worth, RWHu seems a very useful course to me, and quite frankly, it's better that your fellow students nitpick your writing than getting it done sometime in the future by an unknown peer reviewer who may not feel any need to be kind. See it as a very useful set of training wheels.
I'm quite envious of you studying latin and paleography - it's something that I've felt could really come in handy for lots of things.
Those are the ones I feel will be of lasting use to me. To be honest, I'm not actually enjoying any of it yet, in terms of classes, though I got some satisfaction out of doing the Latin homework, since I felt it start to fall into place.
I really need to have more experience of the classes in question, but I think I have to have made a decision by early next week so I don't think I'll have that luxury, especially as one of my classes this week was cancelled so the first seminar will be on Monday. Really unsure what to do, and I'm worried about the assignments already.
Thank you, I appreciate that! Btw in your opinion, what would be better to stick with out of the other two, a basic theory course (urgh theory), or a module on something very vaguely relevant to my research interests but in the 'wrong' period (it's a unit on identity and the 'other', 1000-1400). The assignment for the theory unit would probably be looking at source materials through the lens of a particular school of thought, whereas for the other unit's assignment I choose my own essay question, but it'll have to be medieval.
Regarding the time away from academia, I had a three year gap between one stage of education and the next. I was completely at sea for the first month and went to one of my professors asking, "Am I really that dumb?" He said it was just a matter of my brain needing a bit of time to get back into studying gear after years away, and he was right.
Thank you for that, that's exactly how I'm feeling at the moment. I hope that there's no correlation between time away and time taken to readjust though, I've had a gap of 14 years!
I've had a chat with one of my professors and it did make me feel a little better, but I'm dealing very badly with stress at the moment which I think is making things harder.
