What is the point of a protest? In all honesty, I'm curious on people's opinions ( Read more... )

i feel the same way about protests--meaning i won't participate in them because i'm not sure what they really accomplish, even if i supported the cause they were "fighting" for. however, i think they serve an important sociological function within democractic/free societies, and even more so in repressed societies (although that's obvious).

and most protest signs are ridiculous anyway. i admit to engaging in sign-waving/wearing, but it's better to have them thought out and to make an INTELLIGENT protest. like i saw this one guy with a huge banner that said "she's not MY governor" on his car a few days ago, and that really pissed me off. i was pretty apathetic about the governor election brouhaha, but i think saying something like that one guy did is just stupid since she IS your governor now, whether you like it or not. same to those people who say "bush isn't my president!" get over it people, you lost!

I think protests are an important way for citizens to get involved with our community and politics. Although sometimes they don't seem to do anything they still get out a voice and its our right to voice it.

I guess my only confusion lies in that I don't see how most protests really do get citizens involved with politics. I know the idea is amazing, and I'm not saying I'm right, it is more just that I need it explained to me...

Oh man... I called my bro whose VERY republican and told him about the protests AND called my mom to tell her!! They both thought it was VERY ridiculous, as well as me.

Sheesh... that's what I get for coming to liberal city Bellingham. LOL.

for the parts that i did respond to the first time:
protesting "bush" is like saying i'm going to protest the "iraq war". it always gets turned into someother shit by a few ppl who just want to use it for attention.

i don't think they need to be on the defensive, but maybe they are scared of dino winning in the courts or something. i'm not really sure.

You didn't finish that argument. I believe (though I'm not sure) that it's something like 2000 votes more than voters still, regardless of whether they know where they came from or not. Regardless, it was, at some point, 8000.

I never said "people are dumb" or protests shouldn't be allowed. I just was wondering why people seem to think they do anything.

Its (the protest) is being successful at getting people to talk about it, no? But maybe thats not the point.

I agree with you Larly, but you know that. They seriously had a sign that said "Dino Rossi Lost"? They are definitely feeling insecure about that, eh? Wow...
