Jack stopped in dead in his tracks. He knew May's voice, and yet somehow he hoped against hope it was not her. He knew she'd take him back to the mall, the very place he wanted to avoid. Too many questions, too many people he'd have to deal with.
"M-May?" he turned slowly, eyes darting over his shoulder. Yes, it was her. Rather idiotic of him to think otherwise.
He managed a weak, nervous smile. "I..uh.." he swallowed. "What're you doing here?" Stupid question. "I mean..." Another dizzy spell hit him, far harder than the first. He swayed, groping at the air to try to find something to support himself with, some way to catch his balance---
"Whoa, man!" May caught ahold of his arm to steady him. She studied his face closely. "When was the last time you had something to eat?" she asked. He hadn't looked happy to see her, but that seemed to be her epithet so she wasn't all that worried about it.
"I...I dunno." Jack's brows furrowed in thought. "Three, maybe four days. I lost count," despite his failing appearance--he was far thinner than the last time he had seen any of the Mallrats, still sunburnt, and dark circles plagued the skin around his eyes--and raging hunger, he still managed to look sheepish.
