So, I started a Nethack game last night. Female orc barbarian. My starting stats weren't great, only 18 str and 16 dex and con. I considered #quitting and scumming better stats, but in the first room there was a wand and two scrolls, so I said heck, why not? Okay, so a silver wand, a scroll labeled VENZAR BORGAVVE, and a scroll labeled ZELGO

Tons of people play nethack! If you feel like you're alone, do what I did and start playing on a public server. I recommend nethack.alt.org, which handily can be played via a java applet in your web browser if you can't telnet in to the server for some reason. That said, whatever OS you happen to be using, just open a command prompt and type:
telnet nethack.alt.org
Make a new account and then go! This way you get the dubious benefit of having your deaths announced on freenode.org's #nethack for all to enjoy!
