I ate strawberry mush as a kid, too. Luckily, now there are both "frozen strawberries in sauce" (where "sauce" actually means "sugar") and frozen strawberries that are just the fruit. As a boring adult, I eat the latter unless I can get local fresh strawberries. They thaw intact and have 3x the flavor of the fresh ones.
