curious that the most vocal opponent (Fukuyama) hails from the Bush administration, 1 would have thought the greatest defense against 'people with boots and spurs' would be a rather free democracy, after all, if the government and its regulatory arms are effectively controlled by the lowest common denominator then the LCD is going to want the funky brain drugs too.
yes, yes, they're leading the proles by their reptile brainstems, but so long as there is a wealth of political power in the LCD, they'll have to be catered for.. or in other words, you have to give them something from the realm of things you can possibly sell them

Bush's camp has to please the moral / religious right too. I can imagine them saying that the technology is generally bad, but for matters of national security they will run top-secret programs to engineer the super-patriotic uber-grunt so the homeland has more of an edge over all enemies of 'freedom'.
