Census 2010 - time to fill in the forms

Mar 17, 2010 20:05

Stupid census telling me that Latino/Hispanic is not a race and then giving me such a limited set of choices. I ended up checking both White and American Indian (writing in "Unregistered" instead of a tribe name). I hope that counts. I'm mestiza~

Anyone else feeling ambiguous about this whole "race" category thing?

I ended up choosing "some other race" and writing in "human." That'll teach 'em.

If they don't call you to clarify, they'll likely count you as White.

It pissed me off when I read that part about it saying Latino/Hispanic is not a race. I still haven't decided whether to put down "other race" then "human" on the forms or not.

No. I don't feel that Hispanic or Latino is a race.

So here's what I think... what's the reason behind yours? factfarmer3000 March 18 2010, 07:05:41 UTC
Why can "white" and "black" be a race then?
It's not nation specific. I understand that some individual people are a melting pot where origins become blurred.
Yet "Chinese, Vietnamese, etc." and other nation specific ones and count as race?
Just like "white" or "black" people, can I truly point to my origins?
Do I say "brown" is my race?
I certainly don't feel like checking any of the other boxes in that census question.

OMG I was so confused too, so I called. A recorded message told me "People of hispanic origin can be any race." huh?!?! Kind of made me laugh. :)
