Tonight I went to go see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with a friend of mine. During the movie the main character is brutally raped, and the entire audience, including my friend, stiffened, turned away, and gasped. Me too. I kept expecting the camera to cut away, like in American Films, but instead the director of the movie chose to depict it ( Read more... )

When I was thinking about torture, I was sort of picturing the over the top almost cartoony torture of films like Saw and Hostel, movies that exist for the gore and make a lot of money. Thinking about it, when torture is portrayed realistically, an audience probably reacts the same way they did to the movie I saw.

But yeah it's, not exactly fun to watch :(

What? I thought David Fincher was in the process of making this film? Or is there another film already made?

I just looked it up too. AMERICAN REMAKE. *sigh*

I wonder who they are going to choose to play Lisbeth (the girl). I have no idea who would be tough enough... they'll probably choose someone like Megan Fox XD

Oh maaaaaaan I hope they don't. I mean, David Fincher has pretty good taste in filmmaking and I hope he picks someone totally unknown and fantastic for the main role.

Depictions of rape and torture (even the Saw/Hostel type) make me physically ill. But anyway, I think rape is harder for people to handle because it turns something that is supposed to be beautiful and pleasurable (i.e. sex) into something violent and painful. "Giving yourself" to someone is a show of trust. Violating that trust shows a complete disregard for that person. So I think it's not the physicality of rape that makes it so hard to stomach, as much as it is phycological or spiritual implications. In the same way that murder is harder to stomach than accidental death.

You said that MUCH more elegantly than I could.

PS I think you would still like the movie.
