Since I don't have a Myspace, I'll add my thoughts here.
One thing to note that we learned in APUSH last year is that the offending "under G-d" line of the pledge was in fact added to the pledge in the Eisenhower era. It was a construct of the fifties, not something determined by the founders of the nation (or at least the Pledge of Allegiance).
And I really like/agree with your point about the flag being an idol.
thanks for that tidbit!! I didn't know that, and you know...the fact that it was added recently really makes me mad. At that point we should've known that putting under G-d in the pledge was against the ideals of our country, but hey that's just me!
