in august my friend, ani, and I headed down for a 4 day weekend to bermuda to meet a coworker of ours who'd moved back home and to spend some time by the sea and in the wonderful weather!
more photos are up on
facebook and also on
instagram.
DAY ONE
it was a quick flight from toronto to bermuda and we were picked up by nicola, our friend in bermuda, and whisked off (on the british side of the road - the whole of bermuda feels as though someone took the UK and plonked it down in the caribbean. same post boxes, same road signs - very british feeling, but hotter) to her lovely home. I had a hard time believing that people actually live in a place like bermuda and not just vacation there. we visited a few beaches, swam in the sea (it was so warm! like being in a giant bath tub!), climbed up a big lighthouse and went for supper at a pub in hamilton. it was really handy having nicola around to drive us from A to B - you'd have a tough time getting around the island on foot but by car everything is less than half an hour away. in the evening we met up with nicola's family quickly at elbow beach where they were having supper and then bought some groceries and headed home for the night.
DAY TWO
nicola's sister and her husband from england were also visiting while ani and I were there and it worked out well! we went to the beach with the sister, her husband and nicola's mum (who is a teacher and has the summer off) we packed a cooler full of food and drinks and headed to horsehoe beach. most people hang out on the main part of the beach, but if you're a local you know to keep walking through the sea, past some rocks and you'll come to a lovely more secluded cove! it was a great day, the weather was perfect and we got to be a bit lazy and just hang out. in the evening we met up with nicola's boyfriend and some other friends for supper in hamilton and frozen yogurt to finish things off!
DAY THREE
it was saturday so everyone had the day off! we started the day with a family picnic in the botanical gardens (me, ani, nicola, nicola's mum and dad and nicola's sister and husband) we had a really lovely picnic brunch and spent some time taking photos in the gardens and enjoying the morning. from there we went on an adventure to st george, on the eastern part of the island, and explored a couple old colonial forts, saw some more beaches and explored through old st george town (which is GORGEOUS!) later, we joined up with nicola's family on cooper's island (this isn't an island as much as a spit - it used to be a US forces base so there's definitely a strange, american vibe to the area) we spent some time on the beach and swimming. at one point a storm rolled in and the sea turned into a bit of a real-life wave pool (because bermuda's a fairly small island the weather is constantly changing and storms pass through without lasting too long.)
DAY FOUR
today we spent our last day checking out the cathedral caves - a naturally formed cave filled with water, very huckleberry finn. we spent a bit of time relaxing by nicola's pool as well and then headed to the airport to return to toronto.
all in all a very lovely little trip! I loved bermuda and would definitely go back!
