I feel compelled to point you at this opinion piece in the Times. The 'medieval lord' argument has been somewhat overplayed. People's collective memories don't stretch back that far. They inevitably compare themselves to their parents. In that regard, salary-wise, I'm doing rather well. In terms of the wealth I've amassed, things don't look so rosy.
Perhaps I'm just bitter that my decidedly lower-class great-great-great-grandfather (according to census data) owned outright a terraced house on Jeffreys Street - a location where I couldn't even hope to own a non-studio flat.
Either way, it's a damn good kick up the arse to either get a job in the city or become an entrepreneur.
