You Halloweeny

A thought from the shower....

How can we judge the morality of halloween costumes? Adam and I talked a little on this, turned out to be rather interesting. Basically, what makes a halloween costume moral or immoral? And to push it more, what makes a costume more moral than another?

An example: I love costumes that are witty and are creative. Chris ( Read more... )

I think that they're all funny.... as Tammy will tell you (albeit incorrectly) humor is always at the expense of somebody else.
I have more to say on this that I will get to later... for now, I can't think straight on it.....

I agree, life takes a bit of humor to survive, but some costumes are just too off-color. For instance, I was forwarded a photo of 4 guys dressed as the WTC towers and two planes. Not funny, never will be. How it's different from Katrina, I don't know exactly... maybe it isn't. Maybe in NO they laugh at shit like that while we here laugh at their clouds.

Is that it? Is it just a matter of perspective?

Does it go back to Robert Heinlein's (and evidently Tammy's) view of humor, that it all stems from the pain of someone else, and its acceptable as long as it doesn't cross those boundaries?

A very interesting thought.

In New York, Katrina - ok, WTC - bad.
In New Orleans, Katrina- bad, WTC-good.

In North America - Steve Irwin+ Sting Ray = good,
In Australia, = bad.

For all over the world, North Korean missle dud = good,
For all over the world, North Korean missle success = very bad.

hmmmmmmmm
