What is the best piece of wisdom/advice about marriage that you have ever heard?

That marriage is work. A lot of people that I know think that once you're married, you're done. I've seen many marriages fail this way.

"The grass is NOT greener on the other side. And if the grass ever DOES look greener somewhere else, water your own damm grass!"

Basically, it reminds me to revel in the good things I have and not to compare. :)

This applies more to marriages with kids, but the besty advice I ever got was to center the family on the marriage, not on the kids, because your marriage will still be there after the kids are grown and gone.

I don't have any children, but that's solid advice. Many of the marriages that I have seen fail seem to do so because the parents focus on the children rather than their union.

Never go to bed angry (at the other.) Ever.

It's worked well so far :-) It's not a bad thing to hash stuff out before bed ;-) Seems simplistic, and neither of us has put the other in a posistion to feel the need to go to bed still angry.

Communicate. About everything you can. It is one thing we've really taken to heart. And it is what has really gotten us through, even when we couldn't be a couple, we were able to be friends because we couldn't NOT talk to each other.
