Today, we take the words of Christ for granted. They are easy to see, and much easier to memorize than a whole bible. "If you live by the words of Christ, You Should be OK!" The underlying meaning behind this is clear if you study pretty much any subject and consider the timing of when 'things went wrong'.

Law: Our US Constitution and the laws around it were biblical (old and new testament) until around 1900. Some time after 1900, you can see the erosion of the law from it's biblical foundation. For example, under President Bush (junior) the U.S. Bankruptcy and lending laws were changed from forgiving old debts after 7 years (deut 15:12-15) to something like "as long as they keep asking within every 7 years, you still owe it."

You can read through Deuteronomy, and if you consider Jesus statements that the LAW torah is still valid. Then we as a country have really fallen away from upholding it in the last 100 years. I'm not saying it's only because of red letters in the bible, but I will argue that creating a second level of sacred has had negative affects on our willingness to obey the law.
