Sherlock, ep 3x2
I'm having a hard time formulating what to say about this episode, and not because I'm having a bad reaction to it. It's just... it's like the fanfic tropes of domesticity and schmoop. I read them sometimes, I just don't have a lot to say about them.
I did have a thought, though, about John realizing something was wrong during the speech. Given that Mary also got to react to John's unusual behavior when he saw Sherlock in ep 1, it had a nice symmetry to it. I also like that as a trio, Mary balances out Sherlock's cruelty sometimes, but certainly holds her own in the "I will tell it like I see it" category. Still love her.
I absolutely agree with fen who have noted the trio of vows, dancing, love etc in the episode and add that possibly the writer's intended the title to be a play on the three of them joining forces. I am also awaiting the threesome fic like crazy! But I'm craving them all off solving crimes and cases, please at the moment. I really hope Mary's pregnancy doesn't sideline her from ep 3 or beyond. I don't want her to get boring. She's smart and keeps right up with them now.
I did have a minor quibble with just the two of them out on John's bachelor night, because it feels like that's been done in the Richie films. I guess they just skipped over that part. Regarding the size of the wedding--it did seem a little bigger than they were talking about, but it did seem like only 8-10 tables for 8 guests each. Seeing as I'm (very badly) planning a wedding now, I can vouch for how easily inviting one's cousins turns into 50 people, so I guess I'm not as upset by the "she has no one, he has no one, and yet! They can fill a wedding reception!" But I was bored by the lack of personality in the wedding, I guess.
Really, though, they are just pandering to the fans with this one, aren't they? I mean, they are pushing all our buttons (asleep in the stairway! Molly! why the hell was Lestrade so upset at the wedding--and while we're on that subject, why was he not on the bachelor night rounds?) which all feels very ominous to me. They are possibly setting us up for something, and it better not be to kill off Mary.
