I was reading through some posts on a multiracial group on Myspace, when I came across this post from an older gentleman, inquiring about the topic of the "mixed" label:

If a person is 'african/american', 'asian/white', phils/hawaiian, whatever, does tha tmake them that label? Are they not just another person wiht different culrural backgrounds? I ( Read more... )

I really don't think that white people understand the need to self-label and identify because to them, "american" is enough. We live in a very white-normative, hetero-normative society, which means that as long as you fall into these categories, one needs not identify because they are the norm. Those who fall out of society determined norms are those who feel the need to identify, and are those who are identified as other.
I mean, who was it that came up with the one drop rule if not wealthy farmers who didn't want law to require that they pass their wealth to their (illegitimate) black (biracial) children?

Okay, that guy is comparing apples and oranges. There's really only one word for his statements: ignorant.

He said that the two girls aren't Chinese or Chinese Americans... Yes they are. They're Chinese Americans.

But... I agree with what you said. I feel very comfortable when I'm around other mixed people. Before you talk to them, there's already a connection. And he just can't understand that b.c he's just a white man who only thinks of race in a negative way.

my idea about this whole "why do we need lables?" and anger about labels is that this is primarily a white issue. But the "Y do we ahve to be labeled in any way? Labeling is what brought on and fuels predjudice and bigotry. " statement is total bull and shows where the fear really comes from.
Once we regocognize that this statement is false, we can't help but see that prejudice and bigotry are fueled by a self interested need for dominant groups to validate exploitation through devalidating/devalueing humans. That reality sounds a lot worse, and holds a lot more responsibility.

It's horrible to try and tell kids who are not white that they are. Thats basically what this women is tryig to defend. I agree with your response!

I have read many of this groups posts prior to and after this and was not going to respond. I was just going to watch, because I am raising a mixed son, but I changed my mind ( ... )
