Another community for M&C slashers is hms_surprise. I own the first book, but have yet to read it. They really right out and discuss not being gay? Dude, if there was ever a bigger hint that somebody IS gay . . .

Yup. In the first chapter. And the fourth chapter. See, there's a character who IS gay, so it does come up. So to speak.

It's really good. I mean, even if he's NOT GAY. And there are some bits that are really hilarious, only I don't get the joke until like an hour later because it's too subtle for me. And I just love sea stories and historical fiction in any case, and this is one of the best examples of both.

Well... brn_gamble July 13 2005, 23:46:48 UTC
...being a 'paerderest' (which is what they called 'gay' -- or homosexual) was a hanging offensive! So...

But, hey, slashing people doesn't require them to be gay, anyway. Slash 'em all, I say. LOL.

Ah yes, Mr Marshall, wasn't it? Had quite a thing for dear Goldilocks (come on, could you POSSIBLY have a gayer nickname). XD

But I agree, that much insistence that a character is completely heterosexual means he's at least bent slightly. I think Jack would shag just about anyone, in all honesty. He's such a little slut, and I do mean that in the most affectionate way. *hugs him*

However, his relatively lenient attitude about sodomy is encouraging. And think about it... If you were even slightly inclined toward attraction to men, in Jack's position (an officer in the Royal Navy), during that time period, would you not go out of your way to act as straight as possible, and emphatically deny any accusations of homosexuality? Sort of a primitive 'don't ask, don't tell' policy in an environment where your life as well as your career is at stake.

If *I* were in Jack's place, yes, I'd probably go pretty far out of my way to act straight. But Jack doesn't seem to be terribly bothered, or even terribly aware, of what people think of him.

That's definitely true, but that could very possibly change when one's life is at stake. Personally I feel much the same way (I'm not inclined to bother with other people's opinions of me much of the time), but if life and limb we at stake that would all head for the hills. I imagine that Jack would rather not hang for such an 'atrocious crime.'

And of course, he has ever-observant Stephen to inform him of things (as Jack is, while brilliant in his own way, phenomenally dense).

Of course, everything is just speculation. None of us will ever know exactly how he'd react to the situation. Only Jack would know that. We can just make rational guesses.

I don't generally mind what people think either, but I think I'd mind a great deal if it meant I could get hanged.

But Jack is such a slut, it's really hard to believe he isn't having sex with men when there aren't any women around.

He's probably just to tired form working so hard. Yeah, that's it.

So, since I am gay, I should put emphasis on me NOT BEING GAY to say Im gay? *smirk*

Yes, I loved that in the first few chapters as well.
