Mission accomplished! A friend of mine commented yesterday that I looked like a dockworker (due to my beard, toboggan or knit cap, and jacket). I've been cultivating the stevedore look for a while, and it is nice to have been noticed! I don't know if they meant it in a positive light, but they didn't say it with any derision, so I'm gonna chalk ( Read more... )

Ha! Actually, I don't think she was talking only about that class of man. She derided the guy that called in and said that he still played video games and had a wife who appreciated him. She called him lucky for finding a woman that will put up with that because "most women won't."

I can see your point, and a lot of what I said was colored by the fact that I wrote this stuff yesterday and had lost my ire for what she had said. I was rushed typing it out because I needed to get to other work but I was annoyed I had yet to post it.

And I definitely agree with your assessment of modern American consumer culture.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Ha! I was listening to that exact same show yesterday. I've gotten into the habit of downloading NPR podcasts onto my mp3 player, and I LOVE IT.

When the child-man thing came on, it bugged me most because she was making these huge generalizations about women in the context of their child-man counterparts, like how we all want to get married and start shitting out babies by the time we're 23.

Pff.

And then the thing about how all this child-man business is ultimately a reaction to the feminism. Pfff.

Maybe they just enjoy video games. Sheesh.

THE BIOLOGICAL IMPERATIVE IS FOR SUCKERS WHO CAN'T OUT-THINK THEIR OWN UTERUS.

Yargh.

Caps caps caps!

I had coffee and got re-annoyed since my last comment.

I neglected to mention that I didn't catch the whole interview. I would have been quite a bit MORE pissed if I had known she actually said that the child-man was a reaction to feminism. She must have said that when I was actually in the store, indulging my child-man tendencies.

I mean that's so baseless and falsely nostalgic. It's not like there weren't guys prior to women's lib that reveled in the single life, and wasted time with vices and unproductive hobbies.

What does that say about feminism? It's so misogynistic. Does she just hate everyone?

Some people play golf, some people knit, you like to play video games. It's all the same man. Find people you think are really giving to society and I'm sure you'll find they like to read mystery novels in their spare time or something. Everyone has to have some kind of hobby that makes them happy. That woman who was on the radio show's favorite hobby is probably nagging her husband. YOU get to decide whether that hobby is an hour a day or all you ever do. You're in control of it. Anyway, just because you have something around that you can devote time to that only really provides you with fun, isn't a bad thing. Especially not Halo 3 because you'll be playing it with friends! And what more is there to life than friends?
