BBC: UK 'must insulate 25 million homes'

Feb 28, 2017 09:32

A report to Parliament says 25 million existing homes will not meet the insulation standards required by mid-century.

Reported by the BBC.

I am not permitted to materially improve the insulation in my (grade 2 listed) house. So, if anyone in Government wants better home insulation from me, they need to let me do it.

Half of my house has single brick width walls, can't put any insulation in them. I checked. Loft is full, though.

Several houses near me have recently had external wall insulation added.
Once finished you can only tell where the edges stick out, but having seen it during construction it looks like a thick layer of foam+foil board is put on the external wall and weather-proofed.

That would be astoundingly ugly on half of a brick house.

That's reminded me to check. Nobody has double glazing at the *front* of this (Grade II* Listed) terrace, so I'd been assuming it was totally verboten. However, I spotted a couple of places for sale on Rightmove where it looked like they had double glazing at the back. Even just replacing the draughty wooden French windows in my bedroom would probably cut down a lot of heat losses...

Quite so, it would help a lot. However I've been told by a local conservation officer that all conservation officers in Cambridgeshire have agreed among each other to refuse any applications for double glazing.

This is, to me, startlingly unjust, and when I can find a contractor to give me a suitable design, I intend to try it on and see what happens. My intention is to propose the replacement of glass in windows mostly to the rear of the property.

http://www.changeworks.org.uk/sites/default/files/Double_Glazing_in_Listed_Building.pdf makes interesting reading, although a Not Invented Here attitude was sniffily evident in a response when I mentioned this a local conservation officer it might help in an appeal or with a less dogmatic person.
