You know.. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and generally think people feel passionately one way or another on political issues because of their beliefs on the role of government or their religion or a fear they have or whatever... Not everyone in the GOP is a racist.

People are uncomfortable because society is becoming more integrated and democratic. There is always a reactionist flare-up when minority groups achieve greater levels of access. Look at it this way, in the 1940s and early 50s nobody was talking about race. Then in the late 50s and particularly the 60s there was an explosion of violence and angry rhetoric because people who were formerly kept out of society were forcing their way in.
The angrier conservatives get (and today's name-calling has nothing on the 1920s or 1960s) the more sure you can be that the "silent majority" are coming to accept a broader definition of what it is to be an American.
Sit tight, write your represenatives, vote. We'll get there.

Pfft. The 20s and 60s? Just pick any decade in U.S. history and it's shocking - from freaking poets that write happy lovey shit too! We have ALWAYS been about preserving this country for US and "fuck THEM" even if THEM made this such a nice place to find.

Yeah, but the beauty is that US keeps expanding. As long as we keep finding other THEMS to blame.
