i agree with most of this list but am i bit disappointed that okkervil river and diane cluck did not make the top 5!! black sheep boy has got to be my most favorite album of the year. the decemberists will always be one of my favorite bands ever, but picaresque was killed by annoying managers at work who insisted on playing it 5 millions time in a row. i still think 5 songs is my favorite, though.
matthew bubar, i do believe you may have a career in music journalism. i enjoy your lists. i need another mix from you.
i agree! but then again, okkervil river would be number one for me because they happen to be my favorite band.
also, have you heard okkervil river's new "black sheep boy appendix"? if not you should give it a listen because it would've most definitely made this list.
your top twenty is definitely filled with some amazing stuff, but all of the other bands i've never really listened to (except for a few but i don't feel like scrolling to find them). looks like i'll have to now!
exemplary list my friend! are you in the music journalism racket as well? if so, you and i should pair up and put something cogent together, i think that'd be cool. i have some gripes with the order and some of the selections(the only list norma jean should be on is top 50 bands that sound like coalesce), but it's all my own opinion. seriously, good work.
i disagree, picaresque was a cosumation of every good idea the decemberists have ever had put onto one album. sure thier previous two albums fit the whimsical motif, as far as musically proficiency and intensity, i think picaresque is the best album they have to date. just my opinion.
sufjan did put out the best album of the year though.
i don't agree with robbers on high street, eisely, the electronic bright eyes bilge and the norma jean album, aside from that i think matty had a pretty spot on compilation of all the noteworthy albums of 2005.
i know how you feel about norma jean, i just liked the album because it wasn't all chuga chuga. they do some fine work with those guitars. and robbers on high street mostly only made it because a friend of mine's brother is the drummer. just showing support.
but you know how these lists go, there's always some re-ordering you could have done, but the list is already done.
very nicely done. good job putting mount eerie high up on the list WHERE IT BELONGS. i think ten in the swear jar and oh, vanille could've been higher but i'm glad they made the cut. also, very ballsy putting i'm wide awake, its morning so far up -- everyone jumped off the conor boat, maybe for good reason, but that album made my top five without a doubt.
thanking for backing up conor. honestly, everyone bashes him because he's been tagged as "emo" and therefore it's not "cool" to listen to him.
and mount eerie, my god. i got the album in the mail the other day with the HUGE foldout. hands down the best album i've ever bought. phil elverum is a genius.
let me know when you get your list done. i wanna see it.
