i'm a Critical Theory major. it'll be so awesome. definitely some of the best profs on campus teaching some really important classes. people are pretty averagely non-scene and seem to let other characteristics identify them. we're down to earth and i'm assuming friendlier than a lot of campuses considering the experiences of some of my friends especially on the east coast. food is better than most. as far as the high concentration of "liberals" i was somewhat disappointed by the activism on this campus when i first arrived and felt that people were too politically moderate. but i have now found a really cool group of people who are more radical but still very approachable and friendly and not clove smoking whatevers. example being this week of critical whiteness events. so good. hope you come.
Sorry, kinda late, but I think I can at least help out with the orchestra question, as I play trombone in it.
The orchestra is a combination of Cal-Tech students, Oxy students, and members of the local community. We rehearse once a week for 3 hours (Tuesday nights). It's a pretty good group, but by no means super-competitive. There's a very broad range of abilities, from near-professionals to, um, people that perhaps shouldn't be playing the french horn, and should instead try something more suitable to their talent level, like a kazoo.
I don't know anything about the cello section in particular, but if you'd like, you can e-mail my friend Mackenzie who plays cello in the orchestra. Her address is misrael-trum (at) oxy.edu.
If you'd like to hear some recordings from our concerts this year, let me know and I can e-mail 'em to you.
So yeah. Good group, we play some awesome music, but not too time-consuming. If you come to Oxy, you should definitely come play with us!
