Keycon 2012

Things I learned from this year's Keycon:

10- People who dress as bananas get a lot of attention. Especially when they walk in late to a panel on feminism in fantasy.

9- There is absolutely a geek hierarchy. Unfortunately, none of the geeks can seem to figure out what it is, since they all perceive themselves as being cooler than someone else.

8- If you and your husband show up as Padme and Vader, and your kids are dressed as Leia, Luke, and a little Wookiee respectively, people will assume your kid's actual names are Luke and Leia.

7- I have a steampunk costume sitting in my closet without having to buy anything for it.

6- There's a society that teaches historical Highland broadsword, with a branch right here in the city. The husband is interested, so we may have to investigate that one further.

5- Zombies are love.

4- Bellydance panels are a lot of fun, especially when they involve audience participation.

3- Sisters are not allowed to bellydance. Or so I'm told.

2- Concom looks at you with glee when you suggest you may be willing to volunteer for next year's con. This is likely a warning sign. Flee if you can.

1- When you walk around con with no pants on, every woman in the place will come over and squee over your costume and how great it looks. The men will be mysteriously (and hilariously) silent on the subject.

And now... photos!

The brother as Banana Fett:

The husband in his hand-crafted leather armour and me with my lack of pants:

The Star Wars themed costumes were the same ones we wore at Halloween (although vanity forces me to point out I've lost 10 or 12 pounds since then). Friday night was the only part of the con the kids went to, so those are the only child costumes involved. They spent the rest of the weekend at their grandparents' house because I am not crazy enough to try to manage three children during a geek convention. Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of the steampunk costumes from Sunday. I forgot to grab the camera on our way out the door Sunday morning and spent the rest of the day kicking myself over it. Other people did take photos, but I haven't seen them surface on facebook or anywhere else yet.

And finally, the brother's hilarious and animated con report:
