One bonus of my epilepsy is that I have the frequent challenge of expressing myself or understanding others when words stop making sense. This doesn't occur all the time but sporadically and with varying intensity during some simple partial seizures. I may know what I meant to write or say but I cannot be certain if the words I've typed or spoken ( Read more... )

Does it hash only the verbal part of communication? Could you, for instance, devise a hand signal for use with friends and family to indicate when you are aware of such a dissonance? At least then they'd know to stop talking at you, and periodically check back to see if it had stopped. Then you and they could backtrack to cover whatever you missed.

Unfortunately, I'm not often able to focus that well at the time to remember a signal... I can barely understand what is happening until well after the seizure ends. Mostly, I'm just confused. Luckily, most people around me are aware I have epilepsy and realize what's happening - the Klingon speaking person figured it out from the dazed (and frightened) look on my face after the third request for a repeat.

I know that I have ways I can sometimes indicate to those around me that I'm going to have a seizure (if it's going to be stronger than a "simple") but the ensuing amnesia means I only know from what I'm told. Apparently I've spoken aloud, including to strangers, that one is coming, a safe secluded space is needed, and even to ask for a glass of water for afterward.

wow, i also have epilepsy with lots of partial seizures and have had a tough time meeting anyone IRL who understands. i'm new to LJ so i haven't written much lately. do you mind if i add you as a friend?
