Hannah has just shown me this video on YouTube. I would say that to be honest, I can quite happily argue some of the points made, but the video does encompass that possibility too. There is no given straight fact, just argument and possibility. Worth watching.

Purely out of interest, Dug, would appreciate your take on this.

It's certainly an interesting argument - it comes out of a highly simplified version of Game Theory, where you add up the benefits of "winning" and subtract the negative effects of "losing" and thus can predict an optimum strategy to either minimise your losses or maximise your gains.

The trouble is that it's *so* highly simplified that it loses all the subtleties of the argument. It's the same as saying: "There are paedophiles who use the internet. They may or may not find your children. Should you stop your children using the internet?" If you treat the world as a dichotomy, or as sets of dichotomies, then you end up with extreme outcomes. The answer, as always, is in the shades of grey...

yes thats true however he did say that himself in the video and to try it with smaller percentages, but at the end of the day its says its better to act than not to as in your example with kids using the net yes there are risks but there are also measures you can take to reduce the risk without having to stop the kids from using the net altogether.
i think thats the point thats trying to be made.

I'd say that the worst case scenario he describes is significantly worse than global extinction.... but that's just me I guess.

Load of bollocks

My new fridge freezer from Comet MIGHT break down costing me another £400. So I'd better buy the extended warranty for £200 because that will save me more money and hassle in the long term.

Prove something is happening, then if it is the case act on it
Otherwise I personally feel we should be building defences against UFOs which are much more likely to exist than global warming

Having a warranty will not prevent your fridge from exploding, destroying your house and killing your friends and neighbours.

thats true also a warranty wont stop it happening but it might be better to look at the warranty as paying for regular servicing to stop it exploding.

and i think this chap in the vid has done exactly what he set out to do

hes got us talking about this and thats what we need to to do talk it through and get people to sit up and take notice of whats happening in the world around us not just sit back and ignore it.

unfortunately there will always be people who just dont care and wont do anything till its to late people who will just think "BOLLOKS to it" cos "its not my problem". well its everyones problem but they wont get that till it bites em on the ass.
as long as there are more people are willing to do something than people who are not we may just stand a chance.
