Heavy...

I visited my parents this weekend and, on a lark, decided to weigh myself on their bathroom scale. Mind you, this is the first time I've weighed myself since quitting smoking (July) and starting regular exercise (August). Now before I say how much I weighed, I feel I should preface this with the fact that I have remained between 155 and 165 lbs. ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'm thinking I need to grocery shop more regularly and maybe get a few more health food-type items at Trader Joes. Going to try cutting soda out entirely also, which shouldn't be too hard since I don't drink it daily. Thanks for the encouragement and the advice. :)

Cutting out soda is SUCH a good idea. I did it a little over a year ago and lost a little more then 5 pounds. The added sugar and carbonation.. bad things! Of course, to make up for it, I definately drink more beer then I used to..
*throws up hands* oh well!

Eeks! I just realized I may need to make an exception on Thursdays. I loves me a McCarthy's Jack&Coke! Maybe I'll just switch to scotch on ice...

Wow, good advice! Thanks for distilling it down for me. I've been a bit reluctant to just pick up a bunch of different books on diet. It seems there are a million different "solutions" to weight gain so it's hard to figure out what's effective and what's just hype.
As for the metabolism thing, I think it is true about it slowing down, at least in cases like mine. Even before I began exercise, I was starting to gain a little more girth (and that was definitely accelerated when I quit smoking. When I was 20, though, I led a VERY sedentary lifestyle and ate fast food and drank beer every day. I did smoke a lot of cigarettes and drank coffee which can neutralize that to some degree but...seriously...I should have gained ridiculous weight but remained quite skinny. It wasn't till about 26 or so that I noticed any gains at all and those were pretty slight. Now that I no longer get that help from nicotine I'm definitely having to to work a little harder for it...which is good, really. :)

Well, you are still in a good range for your height and definitely not near being fat. Most of my life, I've been about 110 lbs. I have never been fat either (unless you are using Lon's definition *G*) but I too have had periods of my life where I put on a few lbs ( ... )

Though that is true as well - that wasn't what I was referring to...I was specifically referring to how muscle mass relates to cardiovascular exercise. :)

When you figure out how to curb that fried, salty food craving, let me know.

Understood. I think the trick is to either:
a) cut out one's own tongue
b) die
Yeah, I'm just full of optimism. :)
