It's a 3D online world but with no central goal or gameplay dynamic like World of Warcrack has. It's high in creativity, commerce and social dynamics because the inhabitants are the ones who build all the content and ultimately the world. They've even hosted a virtualized (and highly publicized) Relay for Life for the past two years: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2006/07/running_for_lif.html Apparently, they raised $40,000 this year: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2006/07/what_they_gave.html Second Life itself is still in its infancy so a lot of people are turned off by the hardware requirements and the learning curve, but to me it's a fascinating parallel world that evolves in new and interesting ways every day. :)
The space elevator is a cool idea. I don't know what acedemic community you are referring to? Maybe you mean that it isn't pseudointellectuals or armchair warriors, who may call themselves the academic community - who are really just critics trying to sound smart tearing others ideas up, while not DO-ing anything themselves. In that case, I agree with you completely. Anyway, it is mostly academic scientists who are working on building it, and things like it. It seems it is believed in enough to get some precious NASA funding - if anyone can actually make it work, that is. University of Saskatchewan was closest. Totally cool.
