no. it's more than enough. they're being completely unreasonable. these are not skilled workers. these aren't even jobs that require any sort of mental awareness. the average employee contribution to a pension plan in the u.s. is 5%, they're paying 2, and complaining that the mta wants to increase it to 6. the avg retirement age in the u.s. is 65. they retire at 55, and are complaining about an increase to 62. toussaint is trying to be the new martin luther king, martyr-like. i'm sorry, but they're going to have to make a MUCH stronger argument than "feel bad for us poor people who didn't pay attention in class and are consequently sentenced to work on a train, make decent money, and get great benefits. i can tell you, my three bedroom apt in brooklyn is 2200/mo (total) the same apt in queens, which isn't exactly b.f.e., goes for substantially less. these people aren't starving children in yuganda.
i dunno why, but i just now got the email saying you posted this comment.
that statistic is for ALL bus drivers except school bus drivers, meaning everything from the chinatown people to the buses from port authority (intercity, which is like the charter buses.)
i trust the new york times source as being reliable, especially since they got their information directly from the MTA.
I agree. And it's a shame that teachers are making almost the same amount of money as someone who sits in a booth all day long pointing to a subway map on the wall whenever you ask them what train to take because they're too lazy to tell you themselves; while teachers are shaping the future minds of this country, not to mention dealing with rowdy students, disrespectful parents, plus having to devote most of their free time in the evenings for correcting tests, quizzes, and homework.
