Becoming self-conscious is a result of losing self-confidence. When I say that, I don't mean that you shouldn't wish you were skinnier. People who aren't self-conscious can still wish for themselves to change in some way. What I mean is that you shouldn't wish you were skinnier because you're worried of what others think. That's just giving in to the pressure that the media portrays, just like you said.

My mother thinks I'm a bit overweight.

And I'm sure others think I'm fine too. Discussing this all on here makes me feel better about myself already. Hehe.
