It's tied up with a particular brand of fundamentalist christianity, which is particularly prevalent in the USA.
You're right, it *is* scary. It's a vast group of people who have a world view that denies any form of reality that contradicts something written down by other humans 2-3000 years ago. I'm an atheist, so I've got very little time for religion anyway.
I did like Dawkins comments about how annoying it is for biologist to have to keep fending off these people, and how physicists don't have the same problem. I know far more about astronomy than I do biology, and I'm glad every time I say "that's 2.5 million light years away" I don't have a relgious fundamentalist appearing and going "it can't be - the universe is only 6000 years old." :-)
Waha! I saw that as well! I was having dinner and getting more and more annoyed. (Up to the point where I was waving a fork at the tv and ranting at it. -_-;)
