day one with the raffle tickets was funnyness.
to ... you:
well basically, think it as this:
you're donating toward a good cause. it's odyssey of the mind, and you probably think that the money only benefits us and our trip to the world finals competition but the money actually also benefits our school because our team represents hopkins junior high. and us going to the worlds competition brings recognition and honor to our school. seriously. you know those trophies in the hall? like besides a few sports ones, most of them are from ODYSSEY OF THE MIND. the honors that are showcased throughout the years mostly come from this creativity program that we are participating in. if you donate toward the program, you are donating towards the school. and its not only hopkins. there are odyssey of the mind teams from msje, gomes, hopkins, and mission high. all the fremont teams got recognition in the tri-city voice, and often odyssey of the mind gets into the argus too.
the money you donate doesnt go toward our profit. none of the money goes to any profit. we're not gaining any money at all, in fact we still pay. to send the team to worlds, it costs each person $1600 ish. and about $10,000 for the entire team. we're not going to fundraise that much money, but whatever money we do fundraise will help send us to the worlds competition and to benefit the school.
what IS odyssey of the mind? it seems like nobody knows. to put it simply, its a creativity program. there are different problems given out every year, and each one has a different theme. there are vehicle problems, performance problems, structure problems, and more. the one our team is doing is a vehicle problem called StuntMobiles. the problem is to build two vehicles using two different systems to power the two different vehicles. they run 5 obstacle courses and a skit is built around it, which has to be presented in 8 minutes. you get points on creativity, the vehicles, and style. and theres spontaneous, where you have to solve a problem given to you on the spot. we've spent hours and hours on this project. about since school started, actually, all the way to now. wednesdays from 2:30-4:30, and sundays from 3:30 to 7:30 or later.
in the beginning of march, we competed in the regionals competition and got second place, moving us on to states. in the middle of april, we got third place which doesnt qualify for worlds, but we also got the renatra fusca award, a creativity award given by the odyssey of the mind program. because we got renatra fusca, we're going to worlds. it's being held in boulder, and there are a lot of expenses. besides the expenses that go into building everything to solve the problem, there are expenses involved in going to worlds. theres the airplane ticket, dorm fees, and pins.
so basically, you should donate. we have a lot of fundraising. for two weekends, we were at mission hills tennis club selling snacks to the people participating in the tournaments. we'll be selling snacks at open house and at the concert.all the fremont om teams will participate in the fundraiser at sweet tomatoes on may 11. and then theres the raffle tickets.
for every $5 you donate you get a raffle ticket. each team member was given 40 tickets to sell, so 240 tickets total. thats 1/240 chance of getting first prize, an ipod. second prize is a flashcard, and third prize is a $25 gift certificate for amazon.com. so you have a 1/80 chance of winning a prize. thats pretty high. the lottery you have a 1 / who knows chance of getting the prize. and the raffle tickets arent about entering to win a prize to see if you're lucky, its about just donating and getting an added bonus. thats sort of how i see it.
is five dollars that much? i wonder. its not, really. 5 dollars seems like a lot. 6 packs of skittles! 10 bags of chips! oh my! but really, its not. what do we have to do for you in order for you to donate? do we have to hold all your stuff for ransom, bribe, threaten, stalk? WHAT? sell homework services? i wonder. there will be plenty of opportunites for donation, and it's not that we're desperate for money or anything. everyone HAS the money to pay for their expenses, i suppose, but fundraising and donating is part of the tradition, and it gives you a chance to support us and our school.
