First-year Undergraduate Applicants
1. Completed application for admission. The application form and application fee may be submitted prior to submission of supporting documents.
2. Nonrefundable $50 application fee.
3. Official transcript from last high school attended showing all years of the student’s grades, or General Equivalency Diploma indicating successful completion of the program.
4. Official report of SAT or ACT scores (not required of international applicants). To have these scores sent directly to the Savannah College of Art and Design, applicants should use SAT code 5631 or ACT code 0855 on the test forms. Applicants who have been out of school for at least two years and are not applying to the professional architecture program are encouraged, but not required, to submit SAT or ACT scores. Students applying to the professional architecture program must attain a minimum SAT math score of 540 or ACT math score of 23 in order to be granted regular acceptance; otherwise qualified applicants to the professional architecture program who have not attained these scores or who are unable to demonstrate an aptitude for the study of mathematics and science may be admitted to the professional architecture program on a provisional basis. One condition stipulates that the student must complete MATH 101 with a grade of 2.0 or higher and complete MATH 201 and PHYS 201 with a grade of 2.0 or higher in order to pursue the professional architecture degree. The credit hours earned in MATH 101 may be applied as an elective toward credit hours required for the professional architecture degree.
5. Recommendations. Applicants should submit three recommendations; however, applicants are reviewed for admission with a minimum of two recommendations. (See recommendation form for procedure.) At least one of the recommendations should be written by a teacher in the main area of interest; others may be written by teachers, counselors or community leaders who have had immediate contact with the applicant and who have knowledge of the applicant’s level of commitment and history of achievement. Recommendations should not come from family members (with the exception of a recommendation from a parent teacher). Recommendations should address attributes such as the applicant’s creativity, initiative, motivation, character and academic achievement, thus assessing the applicant’s reasonable potential for success at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
6. Statement of purpose. Statement should be a two-page overview of the applicant’s academic and professional goals, stating previous experience and describing preparation for and commitment to further study.
7. Portfolio or audition. Although undergraduate applicants are not required to audition or present a portfolio, it is encouraged and most applicants do present a portfolio or audition recording for consideration during the admission process. (See undergraduate portfolio guidelines.)
8. Interview (encouraged, but not required). Applicants may arrange to visit the college and schedule an interview, college tour or portfolio consultation at any time during the year. SCAD Days also provide opportunities for a tour, interview and portfolio consultation. Telephone or email interviews are acceptable. A schedule of SCAD Days and information about tours are listed here. Admission representatives also may conduct interviews while traveling. See SCAD In Your Area.
