What makes other Americans closer to me than a Mexican or Frenchman or the Chinese is beyond me.

You really should read the book "War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning" by Chris Hedges. It's not specifically about this, but there is a small section in which he talks about patriotism that is quite interesting. The title is a bit misleading... It's an extremely good book, but it is quite sad.
