This town's beginning to make me nervous, as usual. The two of them stand in my motel room, utterly silent, making moon eyes at each other while I, clad in my ritual robe as befits the priest they seem to want, once again lay out the implements. The red, silken cord, the candles--I carefully light them each in turn, uttering a soft benediction of the makeshift altar. I'll just be happy when this whole, silly matter is done with.

Finally I purify the athame in the flame from the candles and turn to them. "Are we all ready then? No last minute jitters, no cold feet? I warn you, this ceremony is not to be taken lightly."

Actually, for all I know the ritual may be poppycock, I found it on the internet.

The young lovers seem set on this course, so I begin the incantation, annointing their foreheads with oil.

"On this night of a thousand stars let the Gods witness this joining
Perfected by love and melded with passion..."

I wrap the cord around the right hand of each of them, continuing,
"Let these two bodies become one
Let them strengthen each other
And all their weaknesses cower and fade before that light.

As I speak this so shall the Gods witness and so shall it be."
