cable modems cache MAC addresses

This was the simple cause behind our Internet connectivity problems. bbz was the first to suspect it, and it sure took me a long time to figure out what that implied. But now I know, and we can get online whenever we want and on whatever hardware we desire.

The pathetic tech support of the provider is getting an earful for this one, though.

Did you have to pull a battery out of the modem to force it to re-acquire the MAC address on startup? I had a cable modem with a modem and had to yank the battery out on more than one occasion for this very purpose.

No, apparently it is sufficient to power it off for about 30secs.

The point is somewhat moot now, since I got the wireless access point router running--here, MAC cloning was the key to success, so I am basically in the same situation as I was at the old place.

Just wish I had gotten there earlier!

The pathetic tech support took the earful and was extremely apologetic. Now that my stuff works, it is easier to be generous.
