I hated studying Japanese but I think that's because I went into it for all the wrong reasons. But Japanese is a very curious language and I'm kind of disappointed in myself for not being motivated to study it.

RE: LJ. I'll miss you (and I did miss you during your hiatus) but if you have lost interest, well, as you said, people change and people move on. I just wish you the best of luck.

It *is* curious! But what do you mean "wrong" reasons? Maybe I'm doing it for the wrong reasons as well! *yelp* Are finding Japanese men sexy a wrong reason? :)
What are the 'right' reasons then? Just curious. :)

The wrong reasons ... well, the major reason why I enrolled at the university, was because I didn't want to work full time anymore and was actually going to go for my teaching license when I saw that University of Iceland was going to start offering Japanese Studies. I had a mild interest for the first thing so my motivation to learn the language wasn't very strong. It's really difficult, especially with the politeness and formality grammar system, not mention the kanji, hiragana and katakana. So I kind of just gave up during my second term. I kept skipping classes and stuff. By then my mind was also on getting into a master's programme in history in the UK so that was probably a factor in me fucking up my Japanese studies ( ... )

*nod* Know what you mean - I've taken classes like that myself, because I for some reason or another felt like I owed it...to the system, a parent, anyone. :p And for a little while it works, but your heart's gotta be in on it otherwise you might as wellbecome a full time beach bum.

It's difficult, yeah, I've noticed. But don't tell me that! I'm at the "this is a dog. The dog is brown"-level, and I'm already beveloping an ulcer.
Meh. I'm going to suck at this like I suck at everything else, who am I kidding. But I might as well try to enjoy myself while the ship sinks.

Sure, I can drop by Oslo! greengras@and so on - just let me know!

Livejournal isn't a contract. Nobody is making you do it. If it's not making you happy and seems like a chore, you're quite within your rights not to spend hours doing it.

Though on a more selfish level I like reading your posts and would miss you if you dropped off the edges of the world for good...

Japanese isn't an easy language - but I do know a lot of students who have had heaps of fun studying it, even some who weren't anything special at European languages.

Good luck with it all, anyway!
