Sometimes I love working in a bookstore... Like when a guy comes in looking for Thompson's "Hey Rube" having only read "Fear and Loathing." I love being able to ply him with three books, plus Matthew Taibbi's "Smells Like Elephants" knowing that he'll love all three of them. It's like being God or something-- indoctrinating these people with my ( Read more... )

There is a coziness and an internal cleanliness I find in removing material objects. It's so difficult for me to attach myself to anything corporeal these days. Many of the items I once owned are now stocking shelves of thrift stores, used bookstores and pawn shops. It's like restoration, getting back to what is essentially important, learning how to let go of that which is not really needed. Like our beloved Palahniuk's infamous novel says, It is only after we have lost everything that we are free to do anything. And really, "lost" isn't the right word here. More like "liberated."

Good luck with your journey, within and without.
Call you some time?

um not really

the only reason we're 'conserving' is because this current crop of "generation" don't have enough math & science in their heads

it's all about art, music & the hippie movement nowadays (housewifey material) but not enough homemaker
to each according to her abilities (and needs)

i don't see enough of the marie curies, but mostly the "frida kahlos"

Excuse me? Every generation that follows the previous one has its fair share of "faults" according to the opinions of the generation that came before. Sometimes those who place blame have accurate points, sometimes they are just the mass-marketed opinions of a majority of people who want the world (or the people in it) to act a in a different way.

I don't know what "hippie movement" you are speaking of, but besides the more obvious peace movement of the 1970's, being a hippie was also about rejecting middle-class materialism and the whole military-industrial complex in favor of a more spiritual, more environmentally conscious approach. I think today's generation may be more passive with regards to a movement in anything not because of laziness but because of confusion or intimidation. People don't connect as strongly within their communities anymore and this creates a segregation that damages the structure for change and growth ( ... )

This guy has been commenting nonsense on my journal for years, D. He says completely confrontational and nonsensical stuff just to get you arguing. You'll get so frustrated by the fact that nothing he says makes any rational sense that you'll want to pull your hair out. I've found that the best way to deal with him is just to ignore him.

I guess I've just always had the mentality that all of this shit that I use just comes out of some magic hole. There's an endless supply of water because it's always there when I turn the faucet on, right? I'm just trying to THINK now about what I buy and where it came from and where it's going to go when I throw it away.

If it's yellow let it mellow...
