We couldn't exercise much at all when I was in treatment. The most we got was a brisk ten minute walk in the evening. Occasionally we did some recreational stuff and horseback riding but for the most part everyone had to be quite inactive. It was important because many of us used exercise to escape negative feelings--feelings we had to learn to face and deal with.

I'm not sure what I can say about that that will make you feel better, but I absolutly can relate. When I went through all that, I wasn't allowed to exercise either, and I had just been on the cross country and track team for several years, and I had to quit cold turkey. I know how much it sucks. I'm so sorry you have to go through that. I guess you have to remember that they're not necessarily (perhaps with the exception of Lindsey, haha) going out of control, and their history isn't the same. Agh. I really feel your pain, though. It will get better eventually, and sometime you will be able to do whatever you please, and you won't even give it a second thought. Until then, be strong, and let us know when you need help.

I've never been hospitalized for an eating disorder, but I have been psychiatric-hospitalized for other problems, where I got to know many girls (on the teen ward) and adults with eating disorders. One such girl was on the teen ward with me, and she was not allowed to exercise at all. No cardio, no weights, no yoga, no stretching, no chewing gum even (because chewing gum, if done long enough, will burn more calories than the gum contains, or so I was told).

I was not allowed to exercise at all, and if I did I got negative reactions everywhere...but like u say, yes it made me feel better...assure your mom that it is to clear your mind, if you have a therapist talk to him/her about it so that they can give your mom a note allowing you to do some type of exercise.
