I have written and submitted a paper to a conference. Hooray! After many all-nighters, and a formidable write-up, the paper is in. Alan was pleased with the paper, handing me mainly spelling and grammar corrections. Alan now wants me to focus on writing my thesis

I can relate to your opposition to working simply to afford "things"; sadly for the vast majority of us (in the west, at least) that's simply all there is. I wouldn't worry too much about it though, you've already demonstrated that you're not a voracious consumer of worthless crap. I think it's okay to indulge in consumerism from time to time. It's not as though you're hoping to cultivate an image via the things you've purchased, after all!
